Many businesses and organizations, charity groups and churches often try to develop a teamwork strategy, only to fail. Why does teamwork fail? Why is it that some organizations have great success and others have no success at all in the creation of a strong team environment? Good leadership is the key for strong teamwork!
When the leadership of an organization is bad it is virtually impossible to create or establish an effective team.
Here are some observations that I have noticed over the years that destroy the ability to create strong teams. You will notice that these observations focus on the leader of the team.
The Insecurity of the Leader
There are many leaders who talk a lot about creating teams yet their inability to be secure in the talents of others is very weak. In fact, they simply do not trust others. To create a strong team will call for the leader to be secure in the abilities, talents and gifts of those they are leading. There is no place for insecurity in team development.
The Arrogance of the Leader
If a leader has an overabundance of arrogance that suppresses the abilities of others the chances of developing a strong team will not happen. Arrogance on the part of the leader suppresses a wealth of talent. One of the quickest ways to destroy the vision of someone on your team is to place them on a level below yourself.
Inability of the Leader to Relate to Those Who are Diverse
Diversity can introduce a wealth of resources in creating a productive team. In the past 30 years with the introduction and evolution of the Internet and the introduction of various cultures to one another, our world has evolved as a connected and diverse civilization. Our inability to relate to those who are different than us is counterproductive. This does not mean that we have to agree or that we see life in the same way. However, for a team to develop in a positive fashion it is necessary for every team leader to listen carefully to every member who makes up the organization. Listening should be a top priority for any leader that desires to see their team succeed.
The key personality traits for a strong leader who does not want to see his team fail is simple. A strong leader is a secure, humble, and listening leader.
Teamwork cannot succeed without a healthy character of the leader.
What kind of leader are you?
Are you secure enough to allow other people to use their gifts and talents?
Are you humble enough to step aside and let someone else get the credit?
How are your listening skills? Do you listen as much as you talk?
Teamwork can succeed if these questions are asked on a regular basis. Healthy teamwork can also fail if these questions are ignored. Never forget, good leadership is the key for strong teamwork!
