Teamwork was created by God! What do you think about this statement, “In the beginning, God created teamwork?” The creation story in the book of Genesis is a highly interesting account of the work of God.
Genesis tells us about the days of creation in this way:
Day 1- light is created
Day 2- skies and the seas are created
Day 3- land and plants are created
Day 4- the stars, sun, and moon are created
Day 5- the fish and birds are created
Day 6- animals and humans (Adam and Eve) are created
Day 7- the Lord, Creator of the Universe takes a day of rest
Day 6 is a very interesting day. On this day God created Adam but after creating Adam saw that the “man” needed a helper, basically a teammate. (Genesis 2)
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” 19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. 22 The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.
Teamwork Was Created With a Purpose
Throughout human history, the power of humanity has been tied to the ability of people to work together as a team. King Solomon wrote these words,
“Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their work. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falls; for he doesn’t have anyone to help him up.” (Eccl. 4:9-10)
Was it God’s plan for humans to work together and to create successful teamwork? Here are two points that prove this statement:
- First, a team must have a clear vision of their purpose and common goals that will fulfill that purpose. Adam and Eve had such a purpose. The Lord gave the team of Adam and Eve a purpose and a vision. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase innumber; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.” (Genesis 1:28)
- The second key for a successful team is an appreciation of people who are different than we are. Eve brought skills and talents into the relationship with Adam that he (Adam) simply did not have. Diversity among humans has been God’s plan from the beginning. To ignore or suppress those who are different pulls away from God’s creative design.
The Bible begins by giving good advice on how teamwork was created. There is no better advice for teamwork than that of the Creator of Universe.
